What is Postarthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis (PAGCL)?

PAGCL is a loss of cartilage in the shoulder following shoulder surgery. This condition is associated with the use of an intra-articular pain pump catheter (a tiny, flexible plastic tube) implanted in the shoulder joint by the surgeon during the shoulder surgery. The pain pump stays in place for several days after surgery to deliver pain medication (such as Marcaine or Bupivacaine) to the shoulder joint.

What are the symptoms of PAGCL?

• Increased pain in the shoulder at rest and with motion
• Increased stiffness in the shoulder
• Clicking, popping or grinding (Crepitus) in the shoulder
• Decrease in range of motion in the shoulder
• Loss of strength
• Joint space narrowing as shown on an x-ray
